As you may know, CASA (Center for Arabic Study Abroad) is arguably the best Arabic program for non-native speakers in the world. Since 1967, it has provided Fellowships that cover tuition, cost of living stipends and a round-trip flight (to Amman or Cairo), allowing the CASA experience to be accessible, regardless of students’ financial status. This must-have training opportunity is for students seeking to advance in careers that rely on superior Arabic language skills and cultural understanding, and the overseas experience is crucial in reaching this level. CASA alumni have helped define U.S.-Middle East relations for the last half-century. They include renowned scholars, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, NGO leaders, and U.S. diplomats – who work to foster intercultural understanding of the Arab world. Considering the ongoing importance of the region, the world needs fluent cultural ambassadors more than ever.
That's why a fundraiser to support the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) is so vital. In addition, funding for CASA has shrunk over the decades, threatening future viability. The program’s annual grant from the U.S. Department of Education and the endowments housed in Cairo, do not cover stateside expenses involved in administering the program, professional development for faculty, or curriculum development. These funds will go a long way to securing CASA’s future while maintaining its reputation for excellence.
